About This Special Issue
Extensive experimental and theoretical studies have been carried out to study sustainable construction since the 1970's; but sustainable construction with helpful of BIM since 1990's; these studies have significantly enhanced our knowledge of the behavior and the characteristics of sustainability.

Sustainable construction brings about the required performance with the least unfavorable environmental impact, while encourage economic, social and cultural improvement at a local, regional and global level.

Aims and Scope:

The majority of the existing environmental assessment methods of buildings evaluate environmental performance of buildings relative to explicitly declared or implicit benchmarks.
Integration with BIM as:
1. Requires that the BIM processes supports the determination of the building specific values for the indicators and calculation of the final results with reference to given benchmarks.
2. With regard to BIM related indicators and indicators that are based on the characteristics of building products and energy efficiency indicators, the determination of indicators' values can be done as described earlier.
3. With regard to some indicators like accessibility, adaptability, the development of specific model, checking software might be the best solution.
4. Tools of BIM assessment, energy consumption assessment, service life assessment, maintenance manual, optimization of refurbishment and sustainability rating are important methods in design and construction for sustainable buildings and in sustainable use and refurbishment of buildings.
5. The use of these methods requires the availability of tools and a lot of additional information compared to a traditional building process.
6. In order to rationalize the use of these methods and to support the use of methods during the design processes or construction processes, the methods should be integrated with BIM processes.
7. The sustainability of our infrastructure is now accepted as a key issue in many parts of the world and it is essential that the construction industry recognizes the important role it has to play and responds positively to the associated challenges.
8. Bridge engineers will have to integrate aspects of sustainability, such as the relative merits of different forms of construction, maintainability and associated congestion, into the design process or construction process. An increased emphasis on the total life cycle cost of bridges should result and this would be welcomed by engineers.
9. Increasing the durability of concrete structures and bridges in particular could be achieved by using prestressed concrete system, steel structure system as sustainable materials and by using movable scaffolding system as a sustainable methods of construction.
